The New Haven Paint and Clay Club announce their 122nd Annual Juried Art Exhibition, an annual event that highlights the art of regional artists. The New Haven Paint & Clay Club, Connecticut’s oldest continuously active arts organization, holds a long history of promoting the visual arts throughout New Haven and beyond. Through its sustained support of the visual arts and artists for over a century, the NHP&CC has become a well-known and respected asset for the community as a whole.
Showcasing the work of its members and regional artists through annual exhibitions, the New Haven Paint & Clay Club actively supports, encourages, and promotes exploration of and involvement with the visual arts in the Greater New Haven area and beyond. The club further engages local communities by sharing loaned artworks from its permanent collection, offering merit awards, scholarships, free programs and lectures, and other art related activities.
This year’s exhibit will be held at the Ely Center of Contemporary Art at the John Slade Ely House, 51 Trumbull Street, New Haven, Connecticut 06510. The exhibit will run from Monday, May 8th through Saturday, May 27th. The reception will take place Sunday, May 14th from 1-3 pm. There will be multiple awards in excess of $4000 announced at the opening reception. The Ely Center of Contemporary Art will be open Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday 12-5 pm and Thursday from 3-8 pm. The juror for this exhibition is Robert Burns, the executive director of the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, Connecticut.

Award winning artist, Peter Seltzer, has had paintings in oil and pastel exhibited at numerous public venues including the Butler Institute of American Art (OH), the New Britain Museum of American Art (CT), the Noyes Museum of Art (NJ), Canton Museum of Art (OH), National Arts Club (NYC), National Academy of Design (NYC) and the Salmagundi Club (NYC). His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Butler Institute of American Art, the New Britain Museum of American Art, Harvard University (MA) and the New Haven Paint and Clay 100+ year collection (CT).

Robert Burns is the Director of the Mattatuck Museum; a position he has held since 2012. He recently led a successful multi-year, $9 million capital project to reimagine the museum. The completed project, which included the addition of a new tower and roof terrace, new classrooms, gallery and collections storage, was completed in February 2021. Burns is on the Leadership Council of W3R (The National Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route Association Inc.) and is an at-large member of the Executive Committee of the Western Connecticut Tourism District. He currently serves as vice president of Main Street Waterbury and a member of the board of the Waterbury Development Corporation. He serves in an advisory role on the Post University Masters in Public Administration program, the Shippensburg University (PA) Interdisciplinary Arts program, the Naugatuck Valley Community College Regional Advisory Council, and the Waterbury Community Investment Program. He has been a juror for many exhibitions at museums and organizations across Connecticut. Bob has been identified as one of the “50 Most Influential People in Litchfield County” by Litchfield Magazine and he received Main Street Waterbury’s Community Partnership Award in 2018. A native of West Virginia, he earned his MFA from the University of South Carolina and BFA from West Virginia University. He currently resides on a former dairy farm in Goshen, CT with his husband, writer Gary Schiro.
To be eligible, artists must be from the northeast, including New York and New Jersey. Artists may submit up to three artworks. The active members fee for the first submission is $20 and $10 for each additional submission. For all other artists, the fee is $30 for the first submission and $10 for each additional submission. Entering through OnlineJuriedShows.com begins on February 12, 2023 and ends on March 18, 2023. Artists will be notified by April 3, 2023.
All media and styles are acceptable, including photography and digital art, except video and ai generated work. No wet work will be accepted. All art must be original; no class work, reproductions or giclees. Work must have been produced in the last three years and not previously exhibited with the New Haven Paint & Clay Club. Work produced with watercolors, pastels, graphics, photography and mixed media on paper supports must be framed and under glass. All wall art must be securely wired for hanging. No clip or saw tooth brackets. All sculpture must be under 75 pounds and, if appropriate, accompanied by a stand. No work greater than 48 inches in width including frames will be accepted. All work must remain for the entire exhibition, through 3 pm on Saturday, May 27, 2023.
Drop off will take place on Thursday, May 4th from 5-7 pm and Saturday, May 6th from 9 am to 12 noon. Pick up dates are Saturday, May 27th from 3-5 pm and Wednesday, May 31st from 1-3 pm.
The New Haven Paint & Clay Club receives a 20% commission on all works that are sold.

Selected Members Exhibit 2023 /
Five artists were chosen at our 2022 Active Members Exhibit by judge, Kate Henderson, to be the Selected Artists for 2023. This exhibit will take place at the Lyme Art Association this coming summer. The artists are Peggy Bekeny, Ruth Sack, Katya Lebrija, Rosemary McCain and Anita Soos. More details will be upcoming when the dates have been finalized. The exhibit this year is at the Creative Arts Workshop, 80 Audubon Street in New Haven and runs from September 6th through October 8th. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9-5 pm, Saturday 9-4:30 pm and Sunday 10-4 pm.
The reception for this exhibit will be September 9th from 5:30- 7:30 pm with awards presented at 6:30 pm.

These annual awards, presented by the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, are named for the late watercolor painter, long time NHP&CC Board member. It was while "Betty" Greeley served as curator of the John Slade Ely House that she established an annual exhibit of art by New Haven area high school students, a tradition that continued for many years.
NHP&CC'S 121st Annual Juried Exhibition 2022 Gallery /
This year’s exhibition was a great success with an amazing collection of works in all types of media. 375 pieces were submitted by 181 artists from all over New England and New York. Eighty works were accepted.
The work of three students was also accepted into this juried exhibition, Siul Rivera, Madeleine Moyn and Ilya Bhandary-Alexander.
We want to congratulate all the award winners and all that were accepted into this exhibition.

Active Members Exhibition 2020 is now open! /
The 2020 Active Members Exhibition is now on view in the historic Sill House Gallery at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts, 84 Lyme Street, Old Lyme CT.
Come see the work of 70 of the Club’s artists on display in this beautiful and bright venue. The exhibition runs September 2nd-30th, open Wednesdays through Sundays, from 12-4 PM each day. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
To ensure visitor safety, several protocols will be in place at the gallery. Masks must be worn at all times while inside the building. Occupancy is limited to 25 persons at a time, with a separate entrance and exit to and from the galleries.
Opening reception on Saturday September 12th, from 1-4 PM, prizes awarded at 2 PM. At the opening, an ice cream truck will be serving no-cost, individually packaged refreshments outdoors, to provide an added measure of safety. Consumption of food will no be allowed in the galleries.
